As part of the Potomac Yard development, the developer
agreed to design a new bridge that would realign Jefferson
Davis Highway (U.S. Route 1). The previous alignment required
a very sharp turn on a bridge as you enter the City of
Alexandria. The new alignment for Route 1 provides a bridge
that eliminates the sharp turn, and ultimately reduces
traffic congestion. The geotechnical engineering design
included two bridge options and was completed in accordance
with VDOT design requirements. The final design for the
bridge included an 850 feet long bridge with relatively
long spans and large skews. A total of 500 steel H-piles
were used to provide foundation support. The project was
completed under a design–build agreement with Shirley
Construction and Earth Tech. GeoConcepts was contracted
by Earth Tech to provide quality control on behalf of the
owner during construction.
