GeoConcepts Engineering, Inc. was contracted to conduct a limited environmental investigation of a proposed Visitors Center for the Washington monument. The new Visitors Center was planned to consist of an underground building with a pedestrian tunnel leading to the Washington Monument. Extensive coordination and planning with representatives of the National Park Service was required due to heightened security, and to ensure that the field work would not cause excessive disruption of the Washington Monument activities. Ultimately, the original plans for the Visitors Center were canceled and security improvements, including a perimeter wall around the monument were installed. GeoConcepts provided full-time monitoring and testing during construction of the security improvements.
