GeoConcepts working with GSA on St. Elizabeth’s Campus Redevelopment

(ASHBURN, January 26, 2010) – GeoConcepts Engineering, Inc. (GeoConcepts) is working with GSA on one of the most ambitious redevelopment projects in the United States: the Redevelopment of the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus. The redevelopment project includes the construction of headquarters facilities for the Coast Guard, FEMA and Department of Homeland Security. In addition, a significant amount of infrastructure work is required to support these facilities.
GeoConcepts originally got involved by conducting a preliminary geotechnical engineering study for the Master Plan of the site. The preliminary study indicated the presence of significant geotechnical challenges, including deep existing fills of over 65 feet, fly ash deposits associated with the former power plant on site, and marine clays which are well-documented with excessive shrink/swell and slope instability problems.
After the preliminary study, GeoConcepts contracted with GSA to provide services for a variety of projects including:
• U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters Geotechnical Study
• Central Utility Plant Preliminary Geotechnical Study
• West Campus Hydrogeologic Study
• Site Infrastructure Retaining Walls and Access Roadway
Study
• ReMi Seismic Classification Survey of Historic Structures
In addition, GeoConcepts developed work plans for additional geotechnical studies that will be required for the site development. All projects for this redevelopment project are fast tracked, and require extensive coordination with various government entities. GeoConcepts’ familiarity with the complicated subsurface conditions and their close working relationship with GSA and other team members, allowed them to implement their studies and develop practical oriented geotechnical solutions in a timely fashion.
