Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project Phase 2

Provided geotechnical engineering services for the $1.2 billion design-build project involving the construction of six metro stations and 11.4 miles of track and guideways from Reston to Ashburn, Virginia.Wayside facilities, including traction power substations, tie-breaker stations, and stormwater management ponds, will also be constructed along the alignment. The design/build project is managed by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

The project is being completed on a fast track schedule to meet the client’s goals. GeoConcepts is providing field investigation and soil laboratory testing services for the rail extension. They are also providing geotechnical design for all six metro stations.  This work has involved extensive coordination with MWAA and VDOT personnel, as well as Virginia State Police to coordinate traffic control during the field investigation. The field investigation includes up to eight separate drilling rigs to conduct over 1,125 soil test borings, 37 groundwater monitoring wells, 380 pavement cores, and extensive rock coring.
